Encourage the worker to rest until medical responders arrive, and the worker
may no longer be allowed to work in environments with high amounts of
particulate silica.
Numerous tools reduce the amount of silica particles that enter the air. Engineering
controls that eliminate the need to use silica-containing materials is the best option but
is not always applicable to the scoped work. In those common cases, it is important to
always have respiratory protection ready and available for workers and visitors to use.
Respiratory protection should always be used when working with materials containing
silica, except for certain actions coupled with certain materials. In the list below, these
are the controls to be implemented when just respiratory protection is not enough for
the listed action on the bolded material:
Asphalt
x Abrasive Blasting = Respiratory Protection – Abrasive Blasting
x Cutting/Sawing = Hand-held Masonry Saw or Walk-Behind Saw w/ Water
(both)
x Demolishing/Disturbing = Ducted Fan Unit with Water
x Drilling/Coring = Hand-held Drill with Vacuum
x Grinding = Highway Milling Machine with Water
x Jackhammering = Jackhammer with Water
x Milling = Highway Milling Machine with Water
x Scarifying = Walk-Behind Scarifier with Water
