5.04 ATD EXPOSURE / CORONAVIRUS EXPOSURE PLAN
What is an Aerosol Transmissible Disease (ATD)?
Viruses are microscopic parasites that cannot reproduce by themselves. They infect
susceptible cells and direct said cell’s machinery to produce more viruses, enabling the
virus to spread from cell-to-cell. These viruses can be present on surfaces and in
airborne molecules. Coronaviruses and other airborne illnesses are most commonly
spread through molecules present in the airspace an infected person exhales from
sneezing or coughing. Any passerby who inadvertently inhales or places the coronavirus
in or on their body can become infected. Therefore, several workplace measures must
be considered to mitigate exposure to such a virulent virus – respiratory illnesses spread
at a rapid pace and can quickly harm many individuals across multiple locations.
Coronavirus Prevention
Coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV-2 spread via direct bodily contact, which can be
transmitted via airborne liquid molecules or from molecules present on a previously
contaminated surface. Measures to prevent the coronavirus’ spread all center on
preventing sources of the virus from into physical contact with non-infected persons.
