teammates do not work or operate in IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health)
situations, and any work that needs to be performed in such an environment shall be
performed by a different organization (usually subcontracted to TEAMWRKX
Construction).
13.06 CRANES
TEAMWRKX Construction does not have any teammates who operate cranes. The
information provided in this safety manual is to inform our teammates of safe practices
and what to see on a construction site when observing other trades/professionals. All of
this work is actually provided by others, and we have competent persons who supervise
their work.
Only qualified operators shall be permitted to operate cranes. Operators are responsible
for exercising the caution necessary for the safe operation of their equipment. Operators
shall immediately report unsafe conditions – including defects in the machine – to their
supervisor. A competent/qualified person will confirm that the manufacturer’s
specifications are to be properly followed during assembly and disassembly (which are
processes directed by said competent/qualified person). A pre-operation assessment of
all hazards should be identified prior to work. The operator’s manual must be followed
and readily available in the cab at all times. Operators may refuse a load if deemed unsafe.
Crane operation can lead to dangerous situations for anyone near the crane while it
conducts its lifting and rigging; therefore, these specific guidelines must also be
acknowledged and followed:
x Operators shall not permit anyone to ride the hook or load, and all teammates
shall stay clear of any suspended load.
x When the operator leaves the machine or while repairs are being made, it is
their responsibility to set the brakes, secure the boom, take the machine out of
gear and turn off the engine.
x When making a lift, the operator will take operational signals only from the
signal person authorized to give them. An emergency stop signal given by
anyone will be acted upon by the operator. The signal person must be used and
trusted when the operator’s view is obstructed.
x It is the joint responsibility of the operator and the riggers to see that all hitches
are secure and that all loose slack in the lines is removed before the loads are
lifted. Material should not be hoisted until it is ready to be used/put into place.
x Cranes must be placed on stable ground and kept at least 20 feet away from
power lines. This includes ANY PART of the equipment. All safety devices must
be in proper working order. If you must come within it, please refer to pages 34,
35, and 36.
x Safety hooks, or properly moussed hooks shall be used on all operations where
loads are being handled.
