Job-built wood protective covers and troughs shall be
constructed of at least “Standard Grade” Douglas Fir, as graded
by either the Western Lumber Grading Rules 98, handbook,
effective March 1, 1998, published by the Western Wood
Products Association, or the Standard No. 17 Grading Rules for
West Coast Lumber, handbook, effective September 1, 1991 and
revised January 1, 2000, published by the West Coast Lumber
Inspection Bureau, which are hereby incorporated by reference.
Job-built protective covers, except for troughs as depicted in
Appendix Plate C-25 of DIR code, shall, at the minimum, be
capable of withstanding the impact of a 250-pound weight
dropped from a height of 10 feet without penetration failure of
the cover.
x This drop test requirement applies to protective covers
used to prevent employee impalement where the
employee is exposed to fall heights of up to 7 1/2 feet.
x Drop test specifications for job-built protective covers
listed above shall be modified where fall heights greater
than 7 1/2 feet are anticipated, to ensure that the
protective cover can withstand increased impact loading.
13.18 LADDERS

No Teammate may use any ladder which is defective or does not meet applicable
OSHA/ANSI standards and requirements. Periodic inspections shall be
conducted to ensure the safety quality of the equipment. Any defective ladder
will be tagged and removed from service.

Wooden ladders shall not be painted. They may be treated with linseed oil.
x
Splicing of ladders and exceeding the load limits for ladders are strictly
prohibited.
x
Work shall be arranged so that teammates are able to face ladders and use both
hands while climbing or descending. Furthermore, ladders shall only be used in
the manners for which they were purposely designed (by the manufacturer).
x
Transporting of heavy or awkward shaped items via ladders is prohibited.
x
Stepladders must never be used as straight ladders. They must be fully opened
at all times except when in storage. Teammates must never stand on the top of
stepladders.
