13.23 OFFICE SAFETY
Offices are comparatively safe places in which to work; yet accidents occur. To make a
work area safe, or when assisting in the office, teammates must follow these safe
practices and procedures:

Be careful not to track in mud or grease. Wipe your shoes on mats before
entering the office. Water spots and spilled liquids must be cleaned up promptly.
Scrap materials and trash are fire and tripping hazards if an excess of these are
created. Always remove excess amounts as soon as possible, and never use
trash containers (wastebaskets) as ashtrays.
Watch for telephone cords, office machine wires, wastebaskets, and other
hazards underfoot which may cause a tripping hazard. Do not store unprotected
sharp or pointed objects in desk drawers.
Be sure you have a firm footing when you must climb. Always use a safe step
stool or stepladder.
Do not stand and talk in front of closed doors - they may open suddenly.
Read mail and other materials at your desk - not while walking.
Use handles when closing files, desk drawers, and safety or vault doors. Do not
leave them open or unattended.
Walk; do not run, in corridors or stairs. Use handrails where provided.
Be careful on swivel chairs. Do not slump back in them without first testing the
weight gradually. Never use any chair, especially a rolling or swiveling chair as a
ladder.
Never have more than one filing cabinet drawer open at a time.
Do not lean back on two legs of a chair.
Do not set heavy office machines close to the edge of your desk.
13.24 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a crucial piece of safety that cannot be overlooked
and must be worn and be in good condition whenever a teammate steps onto a jobsite.
