13.27 SPILL PREVENTION / RESPONSE
TEAMWRKX Construction does not store nor plan to store any kind of hazardous
chemicals at our jobsites, however there will be subcontractors and affiliated teammates
who do, such as clients. Therefore, it is important for TEAMWRKX teammates to know
how to interact with and respond to a situation where a hazardous spill has taken place.
x
First, all hazardous chemicals must be recorded by filing their SDS sheet in the
TEAMWRKX Safety Library on the Shared Drive.
x
Second, the best way to prevent a hazardous chemical spill is to properly store
and label said hazardous chemicals in their respective containers. All stored
containers shall be kept as low to the ground and as well-secured as possible
due to California’s frequent earthquakes. Implementing engineering controls is
the best way to minimize the likelihood of a future problem like a chemical spill.
TEAMWRKX does not carry spill kits but does have first-response materials that could be
used in the event of a chemical spill, such as gloves, eye protection, and respiratory
protection. TXC shall call a hazardous waste subcontractor to handle any and all spills.
Any spill response materials or spill kits which a hazardous waste subcontractor brings to
the site must be adequate for any and all anticipated spills. TEAMWRKX’s duty is to ensure
the safety and wellbeing of its teammates and the general community from exposing
themselves to the hazard. TXC Field Teammates are trained in OSHA-30 and have a
general grasp on how to handle proper spill prevention and response procedures. They
must also call the Chief Safety Officer upon discovering any potential issue with a
hazardous chemical. 911 could be necessary as well but shall be called at the CSO’s
direction. As mentioned in the General Waste Management section earlier in this IIPP,
the best way to prevent spills is to regularly perform housekeeping duties around jobsites
and the office as well (wherever chemicals are stored as well). Specifically, these
housekeeping duties include:
x Always observing and remaining aware of the jobsite’s live conditions. Where
chemicals/hazardous materials are being stored and how they affect the jobsite.
x Always keep stored chemicals/hazardous materials away from locations that
could be environmentally compromised by a hazardous spill (e.g., store
chemicals on concrete flooring or in a building rather than close to grass or other
natural elements).
x Always immediately report a hazardous spill, NEVER wait to tell someone.
