Surface & Subsurface
Safety Systems
Issue Date: 10/16/23
Revision Date: 10/16/23
Reference: A-13
Identifying tasks which must be performed only by or under the supervision of a worker that has
been trained in surface and subsurface safety systems
Enhancing the performance and efficiency of surface and subsurface safety systems
Put controls in place to reduce incidents involving surface and subsurface safety systems
Ensure workers are properly informed about and trained to their roles and responsibilities of
surface and subsurface safety systems
Regulatory or jurisdiction requirements pertaining to surface and subsurface safety systems
Workers
Qualified workers must follow the safe work procedures when working with surface and subsurface safety
systems. Workers must have the appropriate training and technical skills to perform the work safely.
Unqualified works are restricted to performing tasks unless under the direct supervision of a qualified worker
or supervisor.
PROCEDURES
Risks
The Company will assess the risks of surface and subsurface safety systems including risks caused by the failure
of the surface and subsurface safety valve. A failure could allow the release of fluids to flow to the surface or at
a subsurface level. This flow could cause environmental, worker, asset damage or the public. There are
additional risks associated with surface and subsurface safety systems due to the more complex reservoir
development and greater water depth.
Assessing Risk
Before work is carried out, workers must assess the risks that may be caused by installation or failure of a surface
and subsurface safety system. This should be an identification and careful examination of:
x
x
The work activities involving the installation, maintenance, or use of surface and subsurface
safety systems
The ways in which the surface and subsurface safety systems and work activities could harm
workers, the environment, assets, or the public
All risks will be identified by their hazards to the environment, worker, asset, and the public. The purpose is to
determine what is needed to eliminate or reduce the risks from the failure of a surface and subsurface safety
systems.
